We had the pleasure of photographing for Carlton Park Restaurant before (See photos from the first photo session HERE),  and once again we were asked to come in and this time to photograph their most popular Sunday Brunch menu items.

As a professional photographer you must be ready for whatever challenges each project brings. This project was no different. I came in with the expectations of having a dedicated space and hopefully unlimited time with each dish…oh how we photographers fool ourselves at times, don’t we?!  On the contrary I had to set up at the counter spot closest to the waiter pickup section. Here I awaited as each dish was ordered by a customer, prepared by the chef, and as soon as it was ready, I literally only had enough time to snap 3-4 photos of each dish before it was taken away to it’s proper table. This meant no elaborate lighting setups or additional food styling time. So the pressure was on. I had one pass at each plate, snap two or three photos with and off the plate went.

Gear Talk: Because of the time constraints I used the veristile Nikon 24-70mm lens to grab a wide shot of the plate, snap 1 or 2 photos and then rapidly switch to the Nikon 60mm Macro lens for the detail shots. With only having one or two passes with each lens, it’s great to fully trust your gear.

Glad to say I survived. It pays to know your gear backwards and forward and know how to make adjustments on the fly at a moments notice. Photography is about solving the challenges of each project and overcoming whatever limitations they present. It was a fun process and the client loved the results.
